At the Scuderie del Quirinale, Pontormo’s restless genius meets Rome
At Rome’s Scuderie del Quirinale, Pontormo celebrates one of the most original figures in sixteenth-century painting, with the first major monographic exhibition dedicated to the artist outside Florence. Bringing together masterpieces from prestigious international museums and collections, the exhibition traces the career of Jacopo da Pontormo, a painter who challenged the balance of the Renaissance and opened up new paths for Mannerism. From paintings to works on paper, the exhibition explores an intense and unconventional artistic vision, revealing the power of a restless yet luminous style that continues to surprise and captivate audiences centuries later. Among the most eagerly anticipated works are the celebrated Pietà, from the Capponi Chapel in the Florentine church of Santa Felicita, and the Visitation, a masterpiece that brings the exhibition to a close.
Curated by Cristina Acidini together with Elena Capretti, Philippe Costamagna, Bruce Edelstein and Carlo Falciani, the exhibition follows a chronological narrative through the different stages of Pontormo’s life and career, from his early years in republican Florence to the major commissions of the Medici era, while also exploring his graphic talent, portraiture and handwritten writings. Exceptional loans from institutions such as the Louvre, the National Gallery in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York are presented alongside works from Italian churches and collections, offering a rare opportunity to admire the artist’s major masterpieces together. Promoted by Ales – Scuderie del Quirinale in partnership with the Uffizi Galleries and produced with Electa, the exhibition invites visitors to rediscover a visionary interpreter of the Renaissance whose inventive freedom left a lasting mark and continues to inspire contemporary artists such as Pier Paolo Pasolini and Bill Viola.
