In Vercelli, Chagall’s poetic world of love, memory and dreams
At the former Church of San Marco, within the Spazio ARCA exhibition venue in Vercelli, the exhibition Chagall pays tribute to one of the great figures of twentieth-century painting, whose distinctive artistic universe transformed personal experiences, cultural roots and historical events into a unique visual language. Through sixty works spanning more than half a century of artistic activity, the exhibition takes visitors on a journey through lovers suspended in the sky, animals, acrobats, bouquets of flowers and landscapes steeped in memory. From Russian Village to Lovers with the Blue Donkey, and Large Bouquet of Red Flowers, the paintings reveal an artistic vision in which intense colours and fantastical imagery convey profound emotions, transforming nostalgia into a timeless form of beauty.
The exhibition offers an insight into the complexity of Marc Chagall, born in Vitebsk in 1887 and shaped by revolution, two world wars and exile. His hometown, lost and reconstructed through memory, continues to live on in his works, even far from his native land, becoming an inner world where identity and belonging endure through the passing years. Behind the apparent lightness of floating figures and fairy-tale atmospheres lies a profound reflection on the fragility of existence, loss and art’s ability to preserve what time and history threaten to erase. Promoted by the Municipality of Vercelli in collaboration with Arthemisia and the Giuseppe Iannaccone Foundation, the exhibition invites visitors to rediscover the enduring relevance of an artist who transformed memory into a living force, capable of speaking to the present and to the anxieties of our time.
