At Palazzo Albergati, an avant-garde movement comes to life through art, light and poetry

At Palazzo Albergati in Bologna, From Gaudí to Picasso. Masterpieces from the Carmen Thyssen Collection presents, for the first time ever, an extraordinary selection from the renowned collection of Baroness Carmen Thyssen. More than 100 works take visitors on a journey through Barcelona between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a vibrant city where visionary artists experimented with new forms of expression, profoundly transforming the European cultural landscape. From Gaudí to Picasso, alongside Miró, Dalí, Ramon Casas and Santiago Rusiñol, the exhibition brings together leading figures and influential voices of an extraordinary artistic era, with works making their Italian debut. Paintings and artistic testimonies capture the energy of a period in which modern art took shape, blending Mediterranean influences, experimentation and creative freedom.

The exhibition also offers a rare opportunity to discover a collection that has until now been housed in the private residences of Baroness Carmen Thyssen and is destined to become part of the future Museu Carmen Thyssen in Barcelona. Alongside these masterpieces, important loans from museums and private collections enrich the exhibition, offering a multifaceted account of the artistic and cultural relationships that shaped the Catalan city. Here, art intertwines with everyday life, from cafés frequented by intellectuals to sunlit streets and new ideas destined to revolutionise twentieth-century creativity. Marking the centenary of Antoni Gaudí’s death in 2026, the exhibition invites visitors to immerse themselves in an era of extraordinary innovation, rediscovering the roots of an artistic language that continues to inspire and captivate audiences today.
