The Egypt of the Pharaohs | Bordeaux, 21st February – 4th January, 2026

From Cheops to Ramses II and the Orientalists: Ingres, Delacroix, Gérôme about Pharaohs

Les Bassins des Lumières in Bordeaux presents a captivating exhibition. It begins with grains of sand lifted by the wind. The grains reveal the remains of ancient Egypt. These were discovered by French scientists during the Egypt campaign of 1798-1801. The journey continues along the Nile, a sacred river and source of life.

Daily life in ancient Egypt is shown through bas-reliefs, paintings, and ancient papyri. The pyramids are built before visitors’ eyes. Colossal blocks pile up one after another. They rise to form the tombs of the eternal pharaohs, guarded by the majestic Sphinx.

In the 19th century, the gates of the East opened to Western painters. They were drawn by the mysteries of distant lands. The light of the great South revealed arid landscapes and spectacular architecture. Orientalists like Delacroix, Gérôme, and Ingres invite us on a pictorial expedition to an exotic world.

Delacroix’s travel diaries open the story. They immerse visitors in a journey of light and shadow, scents of spices, and sounds of oriental instruments. Later, other great artists arrived, including Constant, Guillaumet, Richter, and Dinet. These painters created a fascinating “elsewhere.”

Visitors can wander through the alleys of oriental cities and souks. They can immerse themselves in the Middle Eastern world and stroll through the courtyards of lavish palaces. The stories of the pharaohs, their tombs, and their grandeur remain the heart of the exhibition. The pharaohs, symbols of power and mystery, come to life again through art and history.
