La Belle Époque | Brescia, 25th January – 15th June

Palazzo Martinengo in Brescia hosts a must-see exhibition "La belle Epoque" featuring artists who worked in Paris when the French capital was the driving force of art on a global scale

The exhibition La Belle Époque, curated by Francesca Dini and Davide Dotti, presents 80 masterpieces. Most come from private collections, usually inaccessible to the public. Several works arrive from major institutions such as the Museo Giovanni Boldini in Ferrara, the Raccolte Frugone in Genoa, and the Museo Civico di Palazzo Te in Mantua. Created by Boldini, De Nittis, Zandomeneghi, Corcos, and Mancini, these works date from their years in Paris.

During their time in the French capital, these Italian painters achieved fame. They won the favor of the most refined collectors of the time. Parisian squares, wide boulevards, elegant bourgeois interiors, lively cafés, and theaters all feature in their art. Women appear in daily life scenes and intimate moments, making these artists chroniclers of modern life.

At Palazzo Martinengo, visitors can also immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the Belle Époque. The display includes elegant women’s dresses from the finest Haute Couture maisons, exclusive meeting places for high society. Posters advertising fashionable venues, cabarets, early cars, newspapers, theater shows, and department stores add to the experience.

Illustrations by Cappiello, Dudovich, and Metlicovitz enrich the show. Art glass pieces with natural motifs, adorned with enamels, gilding, and engravings, complete the exhibition. Crafted by Emile Gallé and the Daum brothers, these works once decorated the homes of the wealthy bourgeoisie.
