In the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore alla Pietrasanta, 69 works are on display, highlighting the origins and evolution of Impressionists
The Impressionists exhibition is divided into three sections, set against the backdrop of fin de siècle Paris, a vibrant and luminous protagonist of epochal transformations.
The first section, The Realist Revolution and the École de Barbizon: The Road to Impressionism, focuses on landscape and realist painting, featuring works by artists of the Barbizon School, including Delacroix, Rousseau, Courbet, and Lecomte. With the second section, The Impressionists’ Triumph, the exhibition delves into the heart of the artistic movement. Here, visitors encounter revolutionary new forms of expression, with engravings and drawings that highlight the preparatory studies and sketches of great masters such as Cézanne, Manet, Degas, and Renoir. Finally, the third section, Beyond the Triumph: Art is More Than Mere Representation, showcases works from the post-impressionist period.
