Mizuki’s World, Yokai’s World | Udine, 26th April – 30th August

Curated by Canicola, Vincenzo Filosa, and MIZUKI PRO, the exhibition brings the boundless creative universe of a master like no other to Casa Cavazzini in Udine

With 100 original works, this exhibition reveals many pieces outside Japan for the first time. Alongside these, visitors can explore reproductions, magazines, books, videos, and texts. The event marks the 27th Far East Film Festival. Honoring Shigeru Mizuki, a top manga master from Japan, Mizuki’s World, Yokai’s World opens in Italy for the first time. Previously, Europe hosted a similar event in Angoulême in 2022. As a result, both fans and newcomers have a unique opportunity to dive into yokai and Mizuki’s creations.

Throughout the display, personal stories come alive. Beginning with war’s darkness shifting to humor and spirituality, the exhibition captures deep emotions. Characters such as Kitaro and Terebi-kun take center stage. Additional figures like Akuma-kun and Sanpei the Kappa enrich the experience. Rooted deeply in Japan’s folklore, these yokai embody ancient spirits. Yet, contemporary influences shape their evolving stories.

Combining popular culture with anthropology, Mizuki made a lasting impact. By introducing yokai manga to Japan’s leading magazines, he transformed the genre. His creativity and research breathed new life into yokai. Consequently, these creatures transitioned from traditional tales to modern culture. This evolution injects fresh energy and vitality into their narratives.
