At Barberini Museum of Potsdam, a total of 125 paintings, sculptures, and installations by Kandinsky's universe show how geometric abstraction challenged the imagination of viewers again and again
Kandinsky’s universe no longer wanted to reproduce what was visible, but instead fought for a new visual language that reduced artistic expression to the play of colors, lines, and surfaces. Geometric abstraction saw these elements as a visual language that reflected the modern world and transcended national boundaries.
Kosmos Kandinsky shows how geometric abstraction, in all its variations, repeatedly found a radical expression in Europe and the United States. Inspired by advanced technologies and the theories of their time, artists expanded their understanding of space with images of geometric shapes floating in an indefinite space, aiming to represent cosmic themes and higher spiritual levels.
The exhibition features a universe of more of 100 works by over seventy artists, including Josef Albers, Sonia Delaunay, Barbara Hepworth, Wassily Kandinsky, El Lissitzky, Agnes Martin, Piet Mondrian, Bridget Riley, Frank Stella, and Victor Vasarely.
