The thirty-year photographic journey of Alberto Lagomaggiore on display at Villa Ghirlanda
Around one hundred photographs are on display. These images, in black and white and color, were mostly taken by Lagomaggiore using a large-format analog camera. They span from the mid-1990s to the present day. The exhibition follows a clear chronological path. It begins with early photographic campaigns, such as the 1994 project on the post-industrial Polcevera Valley in Genoa. It also includes his first images for volumes focused on Tuscany.
In addition, the exhibition features a large-format photographic survey of industrial archaeology in Milan. This work started in 1994 and was later published in The Dream of Modernity: Architecture and Production in Milan Between the Wars (Edifir, 1994) and The Fortune of Modernity. These photographs form the core of Lagomaggiore’s archive. They provide visual testimony to profound urban transformations and evolving architectures in cities like Milan and Genoa.
From the late 1990s onward, Lagomaggiore created projects for magazines and catalogs of renowned industrial design companies. Among these are Cappellini, Driade, Castaldi Lighting, and others. His work captures the intersection of industrial design and architecture.
The exhibition closes with two recent projects: Cuneo Border Zones and MILANO OVER, both created in 2020. These were published in 2021 and 2022 respectively. They summarize key themes Lagomaggiore has explored over the years. These include urban analysis, the depiction of urban fabric in its residential and industrial architectures, and the detailed study of spatial transformations shaped by architecture. Together, these works highlight the evolving relationship between space and architecture.
