We\u2019re not talking about cyberbullying, hate speech, or revenge porn \u2014 those are serious issues that can\u2019t be solved with a simple \u201cblock.\u201d What we\u2019re talking about are the micro-offenses of the feed: like \u201cthey didn\u2019t repost the story I tagged them in,\u201d or \u201cthey didn\u2019t like my latest photo even though I reacted to ALL of theirs.\u201d Crazy? No. These are the unwritten rules of a new relational etiquette. <\/p>\n
And the people on the receiving end of these \u201coversights\u201d? They take it badly. Badly. Because nowadays, a like means more than a phone call. It\u2019s \u201cI see you,\u201d \u201cI\u2019m here,\u201d \u201cI care.\u201d <\/p>\n
And if it doesn\u2019t come? Betrayal. <\/p>\n
After all, social friendship is made of invisible alliances and digital loyalties. If you\u2019re not boosting me in the algorithm, you\u2019re against me. End of story. And this goes for real-life friends just as much as virtual ones. It\u2019s a democratic principle \u2014 no exceptions. <\/p>\n
Then some try to defend themselves: \u201cOh no, I didn\u2019t see the notification!\u201d, \u201cI was out, I swear!\u201d, \u201cYour story flashed by in a second!\u201d Excuses? For some, yes. For others, tragedy. Because let\u2019s be honest: if Instagram shows you who viewed your story, it\u2019s not just for fun. It\u2019s meant to be used properly. So you, my dear friend who doesn\u2019t view, doesn\u2019t like, doesn\u2019t follow the way you should, not only are you not a real friend, but you\u2019re hurting me. Yep. And so we end up having silent arguments, mutually deleting each other, pretending we\u2019re above it all while analyzing every single move like FBI agents on a case. <\/p>\n
But how do you end the Cold War and make peace? You could send a message, a voice note to explain, or crack a joke to ease the tension. Respond like a human being. Or \u2014 brace yourself \u2014 make a phone call. Or even braver: talk face-to-face. But no. Better to just unfollow, preemptively. Wouldn\u2019t want to seem out of touch, right? <\/p>\n
What\u2019s the point in talking it out when unfollowing \u2014 not just anyone, but a real-life friend \u2014 is fast, trendy, and feels so\u2026 final?<\/p>\n
Maybe we think losing a friendship over something so trivial isn\u2019t the end of the world. Not a tragedy. Not history in the making. But it\u2019s still ugly. Yes, ugly. And a little sad, too. <\/p>\n
