He knows about her lactose intolerance.<\/p>\n
At Christmas, they exchanged gifts.<\/p>\n
At Easter, they did it again, even though there was no need.<\/p>\n
Yet whenever someone asks if they\u2019re together, they look at each other like two diplomats facing an international crisis.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re not putting labels on things.\u201d<\/p>\n
It\u2019s called a situationship.<\/p>\n
A very modern word to describe a rather old situation: two people who are together without saying they\u2019re together.<\/p>\n
The word situationship isn\u2019t new. It has existed in the English-speaking world for years, but only recently has it stopped being slang and become a category of its own. Today, it is used to describe relationships that look like a couple without actually declaring themselves one. A definition vague enough to feel perfectly contemporary.<\/p>\n
The difference is that, once upon a time, people simply didn\u2019t know.<\/p>\n
Today, they organize it.<\/p>\n
A situationship allows people to enjoy almost all the benefits of a relationship while carefully avoiding the word relationship.<\/p>\n
They go out.<\/p>\n
They sleep together.<\/p>\n
They talk every day.<\/p>\n
They get upset if the other person doesn\u2019t reply.<\/p>\n
They spend Saturday evenings together.<\/p>\n
Sometimes even Sundays.<\/p>\n
But with no commitments.<\/p>\n
Or at least, that\u2019s what they say.<\/p>\n
In reality, a situationship is something left unspoken\u2014except that everyone knows it, as long as nobody actually says it out loud.<\/p>\n
Traditional couples used to argue over jealousy.<\/p>\n
In a situationship, people argue because one of them dared to ask:<\/p>\n
\u201cSo\u2026 what exactly are we?\u201d<\/p>\n
A question considered aggressive and, above all, inappropriate.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s when a very specific vocabulary appears.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re happy like this.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy do we have to define everything?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThings should happen naturally.\u201d<\/p>\n
A situationship is, in practice, a trial version of a relationship, and it belongs on the same list as flexible contracts, monthly subscriptions, and free cancellation policies.<\/p>\n
Yet none of the people involved ever seems particularly happy to be in one.<\/p>\n
And still, they keep multiplying.<\/p>\n
